Approximately 22% of the electricity produced in Mexico comes from hydroelectric resources. The largest hydro plant in Mexico is the Chicoasén Dam in Chiapas, with 2,400 MW plant This is the fourth most productive hydroelectric power in the world.


In a hydroelectric plant uses water power to generate electricity. They are the current result of the evolution of the old mills that took advantage of the power of rivers to move a wheel.
In general, these central gravitational potential energy advantage that the water body has a natural channel under a slope, also called geodesic curve. Water in its fall between two levels of the channel is passed through a water turbine which transmits energy to a generator where it is converted into electrical energy.
